 LIVING THE TEN COMMANDMENTS TODAY

THOU SHALT NOT KILL

COMMANDMENT - NUMBER SIX

Thou shalt not kill means more then physically killing a person.  What of killing someone's spirit, what of killing someone with gossip or judgement so they can't reach their potential?  How about killing someone's hopes, aspirations and dreams?  You can kill someone in so many ways,  For instance, your child would like to be a fireman, police chief, doctor or lawyer.  What do you think happens when you tell them "You're stupid," "You won't amount to anything," or "You can't do anything right"...is that not killing their hopes, their dreams?  You can kill someone with kindness by never correcting your child, not preparing them to give to others but rather to be overbearing and selfish.  What of your spouse?  Do you tell him he's not making enough money, or he's not a good father?  How about calling your wife lazy, not a good mother?  Do you not think that is also a way of killing a person until they have no esteem left?

Where then is your kindness that God gives?  What would happen to you if Jesus did that?  Rather, he said "for my yoke is easy and my burden is light." (Matt 11:20 NIV)

God in his mercy offers us son ship, throws our sins into the sea of forgetfulness and sets us free.  Can we not extend the same courtesy to others?

Thou shalt not kill means many things.  Let us search our hearts and ask the Holy Spirit where, in what circumstance and to whom have we killed someone with our unkind words.  Let us ask forgiveness of God and then let us start life anew as we walk the Christian road God would have us walk.
